No replies yet on the other site so hopefully I'll get suggestions here. I've got a 2001 Old Silhoutte and have had problems with the wiper blades going back down after use. We went to the "dealer" a few years ago and several hundreds of dollars later, they worked for one day. They replaced transmission and I took it back the very next day for the same problem and they replaced the wiper crank arm (shouldn't that have been done first???). Anyway, 3 yrs later and it's been doing the same thing. It does go down sometime but usually stay at 45 degrees (it was worse before). Any ideas? Has anyone heard of this before?

I once had this problem on an old Buick. It needed a new wiper motor. I am not sure what you mean by the "transmission," but I would replace any parts that have not yet been replaced, one at a time, starting with the part you think is most likely to be responsible. This whole wiper system should be pretty simple. When I replaced the wiper motor in my old Buick, the electronics were sold separately and attached to the motor. I kept the old electronics and mounted them to the new motor. Perhaps your mechanic has done something similar. It could also be an electrical problem. When I replace my wiper blades, I start the wipers and turn off the car so they stop in the upright position. It makes changing the blades easier. When you turn off the wiper switch, the motor should still receive power until the blades are seated in their proper resting position. Your switch or some other component could be cutting off power prematurely. I would try using a circuit tester light to see of the motor is still getting power at that point.

The trouble with doing nothing is not knowing when you're finished.

I had this problem on a Lincoln years ago...the wipers would stop in whatever position they were in when I turned them off. Many months later problems worsened when high speed stopped working (regular and intermittent speeds still worked). I replaced the switch in the dash to fix the latter problem and was pleasantly surprised that when I turned the key the wipers parked themselves. Replacing the switch in the dash fixed all of the problems--and the switch I bought (used) was inexpensive and relatively easy to change.
